About Island 21
Local Agenda 21 was adopted by more than 150 world leaders at the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and confirmed in Johannesburg in 2002.

It is a plan for the twenty first century, enabling all people to participate in working towards local sustainable development.

Island 21, a network of organisations and individuals on the Isle of Man, will:

- encourage the IOM government to designate a senior member of staff as sustainable development officer in each department and board.

- press the IOM government to appoint an Agenda 21 Officer to co-ordinate activities on the Island

- encourage local communities to improve their own environment and quality of life.

- identify and showcase best practice on the island and beyond.

- support energy saving, waste minimisation and recycling

- promote the sale of locally grown / organic and humanely farmed products

- reduce pollution of our land, sea and air

- encourage all organisations and businesses to adopt a sustainable policy.
